Preparing to hike the Long Trail in any capacity requires some simple knowledge and techniques. The weather in Vermont is notorious for changing at the turn of a door knob. As a case in point, our family has tent camped for years just east of Brandon Gap along a forest road in the Green Mountain National Forest. We have been there when the temperatures have dropped to 35 degrees, in the first week of August!
Rain clouds and precipitation are a frequent occurrence in the Green Mountains and is something you will just have to accept. It IS going to rain here and you WILL get wet :) Having said that, knowing these things in advance makes it easier to deal with and will allow you to be prepared for contingencies.
The categories below contain basic and principled information you might need for any type of hike on Vermont's oldest footpath, The Long Trail.
